White River X38 Crime Watch – five years of growing unity leads to safer suburbs

Since the establishment of the X38 Crime Watch Group patrol, crime has decreased in the area.

The X38 Crime Watch Group celebrated its fifth anniversary on March 5, reflecting on its journey from humble beginnings to being a beacon of hope and security.
The founding member of the X38, Rhodes Abell, said what began as a small initiative by five concerned neighbours has grown into a powerful force of community safety.

In March 2020, the area was plagued by rising crime, leaving residents feeling unsafe and vulnerable. As the situation worsened, a group of five friends, tired of living in fear, decided to take matters into their own hands. They began conducting night patrols, determined to take proactive steps toward reclaiming their community.

“In five years, the group has grown from the original five members to 50 dedicated patrollers, each committed to ensuring the safety of the neighbourhood. Every night they patrol the area, keeping watch for suspicious activity and working hand in hand with the SAPS and local security companies. All patrol members are registered with the community policing forum (CPF), making their efforts an integral part of the broader crime prevention strategy,” he said.

To date, the X38 members have accumulated an impressive 7 280 hours of patrol time, covering a total distance of 145 600km. Their collective effort has contributed to a noticeable drop in crime.

“We started this as a way to protect our families and our homes, but we quickly realised how much of an impact it had on the entire town. Over the years, we’ve built trust with our local security companies and the SAPS, and the support we have received has been incredible. It just shows what a small group of people can do when they come together for a common cause,” he said.

On March 5, to celebrate this milestone, a show of force with more than 30 vehicles reiterated to the community that this group has its back and is keeping White River safe.

The X38 anniversary not only marks the incredible achievements of the past five years, but serves as a reminder of the power of community action. It is proof that when neighbours unite, they can take control of their safety and build a stronger, more resilient community.

During the celebration the members of the group honoured Captain Earnest Phoku, a Vispol commander at White River Police Station, for his contribution in fighting crime in the area.
