Deadly N4 crash claims 5 lives including toddler

The cause of the accident remains unclear, but investigations are under way.

Five of the six occupants of a sedan, one of whom was a toddler, lost their live when their car collided head-on with an articulated truck on the N4 between Machadodorp and Belfast on Sunday afternoon, April 6.

According to the provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, the cause of the accident is still unknown and is currently being investigated.

“The deceased include a little boy whose age is estimated to be one. The others are two men and two women. They were all declared dead on the scene,” said Mmusi.

He said their identities were withheld for their next of kin to informed about the tragedy. He said of the sedan’s occupants sustained serious injuries, while the truck driver sustained minor injuries.

“It is deeply saddening for families to lose their loved ones in crashes that are mostly preventable. We continue to call on motorists to use the road with due diligence and great caution to avoid deadly collisions,” said the MEC for community safety, Jackie Macie.
