Mpumalanga man found sleeping in bed next to skeletal remains of loved ones

A tip-off from a member of the public about graves being dug up at a cemetery near White River led to police making a disturbing discovery.

A man from Swalala near White River was arrested after police found him sleeping next to human bones.

A man from Swalala near White River was arrested after police found him sleeping next to human bones. The Masoyi police received a tip-off from a woman that a man, aged 29, had dug up the graves of his father and grandfather.

Following the tip-off, the police rushed to the local cemetery to investigate.

“Members of the Visible Policing Unit at Masoyi promptly attended to the complaint and upon arrival at the cemetery, confirmed that the graves had indeed been disturbed as reported,” a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, explained.

“Swift action was taken to locate the suspect who was found at his residence in Swalala,” added Mdhluli.

The police found the suspect asleep on his bed with the bones next to him.

He was immediately arrested and has been charged with the violation of graves.

“The bones were confiscated and are now evidence in the ongoing investigation being conducted by the SAPS,” said Mdhluli.

He said the suspect has been scheduled to appear in the Masoyi Periodical Court tomorrow, April 30.

The motive for the incident is still unknown.

The grandfather and father were buried in 2010.
