Cold front to hit: Will Mbombela feel the cold snap?
South Africa is in for a bitterly cold week, but will Mpumalanga feel it?
An intense cold front is expected to hit parts of South Africa this week, with the western and northern Cape provinces bearing the brunt from Wednesday, June 25, to Friday, June 27.
But will Mpumalanga – and Mbombela – feel the chill?
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the front will bring very cold, wet and windy conditions, with heavy rainfall, gale-force coastal winds, and even light snowfall over high ground in the affected regions.
Extended weather forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, 24-25 June 2025:
Fine and cold to cool, becoming cloudy and very cold in the SW on Wednesday, with 60-80% showers and rain. Snow is possible over the mountains in the WC and the southern parts of the NC on Wednesday. #saws pic.twitter.com/kwJN1uL4o9— SA Weather Service (@SAWeatherServic) June 22, 2025
On Saturday, June 21, South Africa experienced an early sunset due to the astronomical winter solstice, marking the shortest day and longest night of the year in the southern hemisphere. The seasons are shifting – but winter isn’t done with us yet.

• Very cold, wet and windy conditions over high-lying areas, with maximum temperatures below 10°C
• Strong interior winds and gale-force coastal winds
• Very rough to high seas, reaching between 5m and 8m metres in places
• Light snowfall on high ground
Impact-based warnings issued by SAWS include:
• Yellow level 4: Turbulent seas leading to damage to coastal infrastructure and disruption to beach activities between Alexander Bay and Cape Agulhas from Wednesday evening into Thursday.
• Yellow level 2: Damaging winds causing difficulty navigating at sea and disruption to small ports and harbours between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas on Wednesday.
