Police nab unlicensed practitioner in Matsulu

A woman faces fraud charges after running her late father’s medical practice without a licence.

The 47-year-old daughter of a doctor who died five years ago was arrested this week for running his practice in Curry Street, Matsulu, without being a doctor herself.
Chantell Bernice Reddiar was caught red-handed, treating patients during a sting operation by the inspectorate of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the police on Monday, June 23.

A case of, amongst others, fraud and contravention of the Health Professions Act, are being investigated.
The arrest follows investigations done by the HPCSA in which they established that the practice, which belonged to Dr Stephen Reddiar, was still operational despite him dying in 2020.
A member of the inspectorate task team, who spoke to Lowvelder on condition of anonymity, said despite Dr Reddiar being dead, the practice was never deregistered with the HPCSA.
Reddiar appeared briefly in court and the case was postponed to July 11 for further investigation. She is still in custody.
