End of patrols doesn’t mean danger, say Numbi road tour operators
Local tour guides urge the public to stop spreading fear and misinformation that threatens livelihoods.
Despite the recent announcement that Hi-Tech Security White River has suspended its patrols along the Numbi road, several tour guides operating in the Hazyview area maintain that the route remains safe for business.
Alongside the KLCBT, they are calling on the public to stop spreading harmful misinformation, which they say is damaging livelihoods, threatening local businesses and putting jobs at risk.
The experienced guides emphasise that this route has long served as a vital artery for tourism – operating safely for years without the need for continuous security patrols. They believe the end of the patrols does not equate to increased danger.
We still have international tourists visiting and they continue to use the Numbi road as usual. It has always been our main access route, and nothing has fundamentally changed in terms of safety for our operations,” said Rufus Makwela, a local tour guide.

Jabu Tsatsi, another guide, agreed – adding that, while the temporary patrols were appreciated, their absence does not mean the road is unsafe.
“Our commitment to our clients’ safety remains paramount, and we assess every route carefully,” he said.
Echoing these sentiments, Sthembile Maphanga condemned the spread of negative narratives.
We will continue using the road as we always have and strongly reject claims that it is no longer safe. These statements directly impact the income that sustains our families,” Maphanga said.

The tour guides’ united stance reflects a shared concern for the economic well-being of the region, which depends heavily on tourism.
They appeal to the public for a balanced perspective, stressing that local businesses and tour operators are committed to ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all visitors to the Kruger Lowveld area.
