Road ahead smooth as R40 sinkhole repairs near completion between White River and Hazyview

Construction on the road was delayed by unusually heavy rains and unforeseen ground conditions.

Motorists travelling on the R40 near the Klipkopjes Dam can look forward to a smoother journey, with repair work on the massive sinkhole expected to be completed by the end of October.

This marks a slight deviation from the initial July completion date, due mainly to persistent heavy rainfall and unforeseen ground conditions.

According to Tony Seloana, a project manager with Sanral, work is now back on track despite earlier setbacks.

He said delays were caused by heavy rains in February and March, as well as the discovery of a large rock during the construction of a bypass.
“If we don’t experience any further natural disruptions, I’m confident we will complete the roadworks within the new timeframe,” Seloana said.

He added that a detour has been opened to ease traffic flow during construction, replacing the stop-and-go system that was previously in place.

Seloana urged drivers to remain cautious, observe temporary traffic diversions and be mindful of workers on site. Sanral has committed to providing further updates as the project progresses.

The sinkhole, which formed following widespread flooding in February 2023, has disrupted traffic and created hazardous driving conditions ever since.

That storm caused extensive damage to infrastructure across the region, affecting roads, homes, schools and healthcare facilities.
