WATCH: Meteor spotted outside Lydenburg
The video was captured on Sunday, August 3, just before 03:00 by one of the cameras of Neil Engelbrecht of Mokobulaan.
Video footage was recently sent to Steelburger/Lydenburg News showing a possible meteorite sighting just outside Lydenburg.
In the footage, the town can be seen in the background as a bright light begins to form, suggesting a possible chondrite – a type of stony meteorite that is one of the most common kinds found on Earth.

In the clip, the light burns brightly in the night sky before disappearing.

According to The Conversation, comet or chondrite dust particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of about 59 kilometres per second. As they do so, they burn up, creating the bright flashes we call meteors.
