Head-on collision near Mbombela results in over 20 injuries

More than 10 people were injured but no fatalities were reported.

More than 10 people were injured in a head-on collision between a Nissan NP200 and a minibus on the R37 near Mbombela on Friday afternoon, August 29.

According to Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med, they received a call about a two-vehicle accident.

“Upon our arrival we found multiple patients and the driver of the NP200 was trapped. Additional assistance was requested. Emer-G-Med began treating and stabilising the driver while waiting for the Mbombela Fire Department to free him,” he said.

Jeffrey added that the Jaws of Life were used to free the driver. After he was extricated, paramedics immobilised him and transported him to Kiaat Private Hospital for further medical care.

The injuries ranged from mild to serious and there were no fatalities.

The scene has been cleared and the road is currently open to traffic.

Moeti Mmusi, a spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, said they are aware of the accident but the cause is unknown at this stage.

An investigation is underway to determine what caused the collision.

“Once again, we are calling on motorists to drive with caution and respect the rules of the road. We are going to have a busy weekend since it’s month-end, and we will have a high volume of vehicles on the roads. Motorists are urged to be extra vigilant, rest when they are tired, and not drink and drive,” Mmusi said.

He also wished a speedy recovery to all the victims.
