City of Mbombela provides answer on high electricity bills
The CoM clarified that the current cycle exceeded the usual 30-day period.

Residents who buy electricity from the City of Mbombela (CoM) demanded answers from the municipality after receiving electricity bills that they claim were higher than their actual usage reflects.

The sudden surge in cost has left many homeowners and businesses stunned and struggling to pay the unexpectedly high amounts.
The CoM released a public notice today, October 22, to provide clarification regarding the contributing factors.
Extended billing cycle
The billing period for the current cycle exceeded the standard 30-day period. In certain instances, consumption was recorded up to October 17, 2025.
Consequently, bills may include usage for more than one month, resulting in a higher amount payable.
Correction of estimated readings
Where previous bills were based on estimated consumption, the recent actual meter readings have now been captured.
This may have resulted in adjustments to correct any prior under- or overestimations, affecting the total amount billed for October.
Delayed meter readings
Due to scheduling adjustments, some meters were read in October instead of September.
This change in the reading schedule has contributed to the increased charges reflected on certain accounts.

“The City of Mbombela sincerely apologises for any inconvenience or financial strain this may have caused. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all residents as corrective measures are implemented,” the notice concluded.
CoM spokesperson Joseph Ngala said urged customers to visit the municipal offices to have their accounts rectified.
