Lydenburg’s Zebras FC hosts first home game in ABC Motsepe league

The Zebras will be playing their home matches at the Rooikat Rugby Stadium.

Football fans in and around Lydenburg are in for a real treat, as Lydenburg team Zebras FC will compete in the ABC Motsepe League, the third tier league of South African football.

Zebras played their first home match in the league at the Rooikat Rugby Stadium on Saturday, October 18.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw against Acornhoek United, following a stunning equaliser by midfielder Thabang Mathotho in the 37th minute.

Speaking to Steelburger/Lydenburg News, club chairman Thabo Mogane confirmed the team will host all its home games at the Rooikat Rugby Stadium. “We enjoyed massive support this past weekend, and we want to create an intimidating atmosphere to all teams visiting Lydenburg. We want this stadium to be our fortress,” said Mogane.

He added that football has finally come alive again in Mashishing, with the stadium full of fans for Saturday’s match. He also noted the potential for economic impact, as small businesses stand to benefit from visiting fans and away teams over the course of the league.

Mogane extended a call to nearby mines and local businesses to assist with sponsorships.

“We wish to push the dreams of the young locals closer to reality,” he said. “Our aim is to see the Zebras participating in the National First Division, or even the Betway Premier Soccer League in the near future.”

The Zebras management thanked fans across the region for their support and expressed gratitude to the Rooikat Rugby Club for giving the Zebras a field on which to host their home games.
