IN PHOTOS: Lowveld daredevil runners get bold for cancer

The route from i’langa Mall to Riverside Mall was only 5.3km, but the mark the event left was indelible.

Lowvelders on their morning commute were recently privy to a very different kind of traffic: More than 50 ballsy men in purple Speedos, running to raise cancer awareness.

The Hollard Daredevil Run is held every year in partnership with CANSA and the Prostate Cancer Foundation as a nationwide running event to help raise awareness about men’s battles with testicular and prostate cancer.

The Lowveld’s men are no strangers to the run. In previous years it was held at and around Mbombela Stadium, but this year things changed somewhat as they decided to instead run along the R40 from i’langa Mall to Riverside Mall.

This would maximise their visibility and ensure that Mbombela residents would be unable to miss a group of 50+ men running through the city while wearing purple Speedos.

The run attracted cheers and hoots of support from any and everyone who watched on as Lowvelders got behind the cause and supported the brave men taking part. Participants represented local running clubs, such as Nelspruit Marathon Club, as well as the UXi Pumas Rugby Institute.

The run did, admittedly, cause traffic delays, as it was held in peak morning hours, but few motorists seemed to mind once they realised what the cause actually was.
