Popular Lowveld tourist site closed due to persisting rainfall

Bourke's Luck Potholes is closed indefinitely to prioritise the safety of employees and visitors.

One of the Lowveld’s most popular tourist attractions along the Panorama Route, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, has been temporarily closed from Monday, January 12, following heavy rainfall.

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency’s (MTPA) spokesperson, Simphiwe Shungube, said in a statement that the closure is a precautionary measure to prioritise the safety of both visitors and employees.

The MTPA has appealed to tourists and the business community to exercise patience and understanding during this period, as the closure may cause an inconvenience.

According to photographs provided by the agency, rainwater has submerged the potholes, while the Blyde River is flowing unusually strongly.

Shungube added that further communication will be issued once the situation has improved and the site is deemed safe for access.
