Ramaphosa visits flood-stricken Nkomazi areas
Recent rain has led to severe flooding in certain areas, leaving many Mpumalanga residents in need. President Ramaphosa visited several communities in Nkomazi to assess the situation.
President Cyril Ramaphosa visited several flood-ravaged areas in the Nkomazi Local Municipality on Monday, January 20, to assess the extent of the damage and review the ongoing response.
The visit follows widespread destruction caused by severe weather, which has been declared a national disaster. Floods have led to loss of life, property destruction, and major disruptions across the region.
Ramaphosa praised first responders, volunteers, and humanitarian organisations for their swift and co-ordinated response to the devastation.
“We need to do more to prepare for such disasters, as climate change has taken effect. The government is therefore creating a rapid response plan so that lives can be saved during future disasters,” he said.

He also highlighted the need for funding to aid recovery from the devastation caused by the persistent heavy rains.
“I am here today to ensure that responses are tailor-made for the extent of the damage. It is clear that South Africa needs town planners to improve housing and prevent construction in flood-prone areas,” Ramaphosa added.
