The Onderberg Species Bonanza in Mozambique is in full swing as anglers return for the much-loved deep-sea fishing competition. Organised by the Nelspruit District Angling Club, the event runs from March 9 to 13.
This year marks the competition’s 25th anniversary and boasts the biggest turnout with 37 boats. Anglers have already reeled in a variety of species in decidedly wet weather.

Competitors are judged using a points system that multiplies the number of catches by their total weight. There are separate points tables for fish that must be released, such as marlin, sailfish and kingfish, that are calculated according to size.

The competition’s chairperson, Gert Meyer, expressed his excitement about the competition.
“Over the years, lifelong friendships and business relationships have been formed that are built on everyone’s love for the sport.” He added that most of their support and sponsorship comes from some of the largest companies in the Lowveld.
“An estimated R10m worth of prizes will be handed out this year,” Meyer said.

Boat teams and sponsors who attend the fancy-dress competition stand a chance of winning one of the most sought-after awards, the Spirit Cup. Well-known teams like the Aquaholics, Bigboy and Fanagalo are back and will battle it out to take home the overall winner prize.
