The Kaapsehoop Conservancy has announced that a newborn colt named Wald joined the wild horses over the weekend. According to conservancy spokesperson Carli Scheepers, the colt was named after the place where he was born on the mountain.

“Wald is the German word for ‘forest’ and, since he was born here among the trees, we thought the name was fitting,” said Scheepers.

While the town is overjoyed to welcome the newest addition to about 30 horses, protecting them remains an ongoing challenge.

“We have to continue with our snare sweep projects and make use of anti-poaching units to protect the horses and other wildlife in the area,” Scheepers said.

She added that, following a shocking poaching incident that claimed the lives of four horses in October 2025, some stallions also fight each other for access to the limited number of mares.

The conservancy consists of volunteers who dedicate their time to conducting patrols in the surrounding areas to monitor and protect the horses. The organisation also expressed its gratitude for the donations it has received and once again appealed to the community to help protect the beloved herd.
