A cargo truck driver died today, September 28, after being struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser at the N4 Dry Port exit towards Komatipoort.

Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the accident occurred after the truck driver allegedly left his vehicle and stood in the road to take a picture.

“The driver did not see the vehicle and was struck,” he explained.

3 trucks burn in earlier border crash

The incident follows a September 25 collision in which three trucks caught fire after crashing into one another due to heavy congestion on the N4 towards the Mozambican border. All three drivers escaped without injury.

Motorists have voiced concern over long queues on the N4 causing severe delays. Mmusi added that more delays can be expected with the new border upgrades and the festive season approaching.

“We suspect that the traffic has also increased due to the favourable exchange rates that businesses would like to take advantage of,” he added.

MEC condemns reckless driving

Addressing the earlier incident, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie acknowledged the growing pressure on drivers, but strongly condemned reckless attempts to bypass the queue.

Mmusi reassured motorists that traffic law enforcement officers remain deployed near the Lebombo Border Post to crack down on queue-jumping, illegal overtaking and reckless driving behaviour.
