Wherever the road takes me
The stark, vast desert has a captivating, riveting, spiritual beauty of its own. A beauty that cut so close to the heart, it is tangible, yet affable. It fills one with a deep sense of longing and love no other place other than the desert has.

During the December vacation I traveled from my home town, Sohar in the north of Oman past Muscat, the capital.
I slept in sleeping bag on the beach at Bamah.
This is legal in Oman, and although I was waiting for a Policeman to chase me on, it didn’t happen. I visited the turtle sanctuary and found camels in the desert near Ad Daffah.
The incredibly flat vastness is difficult to capture on camera when one is not on a rise and even then the distance disappears into a mirage.
The coast is the best with bright blue seas and truly turquoise water at the beaches – so beautiful. The fisherman’s life style is so laid back and the beaches are filled with shells.
One shell,Punctateon eloiseae or Eloise’s Shell only occurs in Oman, on the Masirah Island.
(My next Mission: Impossible, will be making it possible.) Leaving the coast, because the road veers off near Shannah, the road is cut through the mountain leading to a mesa with a flat, endless view.

The peace and tranquility is only penetrated by the heat. Although it was December and thus winter in the northern hemisphere, the daily temperature could still reach 30 degrees plus. Dunes are absent and the flat endlessness stretches forever. The Saudi Empty Quarter reaches into Oman’s western border and an oasis (next blog entry) is a welcome change to the long stretches of nothingness. Even here there is life – bird life.
Wow! How nature strives to survive. If only we as humans could take this in and make it part of our make-up. Yes, there is life out there. We just need to look for it.
