Golden era for Lowveld schools sports

Twice during that decade the Administrator's Cup for schools rugby was brought home by Hoërskool Nelspruit's first team.

MBOMBELA – In its 130th year paging through old copies of Lowvelder and the various titles preceding publication under its current name, one finds that the 1970s were the golden years of interschools sport in the Lowveld.

Twice during that decade the Administrator’s Cup for schools rugby was brought home by Hoërskool Nelspruit’s first team, unfortunately shared on both occasions. In 1972 the cup had to be shared with Afrikaans Seuns Hoër in Pretoria and in 1975 with Helpmekaar Seuns Hoër from Johannesburg.

In Lowvelder of November 5, 1976 it was reported that the first cricket team of Lowveld High had reached the semi-finals in the Administrator’s Cup. They had convincingly beaten Hoërskool Ermelo at the oval at Mataffin by eight wickets. Ermelo batted first and were all out for 83 runs.

Guy Denichaud from Lowveld High took four wickets for nine runs in 14 overs. Lionel Gainsford took two for 24 in 11 overs and Peter Nicol took two for 13 in 10 overs. Unfortunately these brave young men were beaten the following week at Wanderers in Johannesburg in the semi-finals against Hoërskool Oos-Moot.
