Keep it moving forward with the Nelspruit Newbies

Moving from Gauteng to Nelspruit has it's challenges and advantages. Our two Nelspruit Newbies Enver Wessels and Zani Barrish share their experiences in navigating the streets of our new hometown.

As an old Lowvelder who has been away for 18 years, I was rather surprised at how much Nelspruit has changed and grown.

When Enver Wessels, joined Lowveld Media a few months after I joined we immediately bonded over talking about what we missed the most about travelling around Gauteng – Uber and the Gautrain, and the least – the traffic.

It takes me exactly four minutes to get from home to work, where the commute from Pretoria to Johannesburg took me two hours in morning traffic.

I have to agree with Zani, the fast-paced city life and easy access to transport is one thing which stands out about Gauteng. Nelspruit’s perfect weather and beautiful views more than makes up for this. Oh, and let’s not forget the concertina buses which lend a somewhat quaint character to the city.

Gone are the days of sitting in traffic when you’re travelling a relatively short distance. For the two of us, the commute to work is a breeze and we’re never late for appointments since moving here.

I used to rely a lot on public transport in Pretoria. Over weekends Uber was very convenient when attending a wine show or going out with friends.

So Enver, convinced me to try the public transport in Nelspruit, hence the photos of us trying to flag down a taxi and patiently waiting for a bus. Confession, we gave up after 10 minutes and called someone to fetch us.

The bus terminals line the main roads and are generally on time. The only drawback is that patience is not a virtue we have. As a newcomer, my biggest issue has been the roundabouts which can prove to be a bit tricky.

Google maps has been my saviour on more than one occasion. The patience of frustrated drivers behind me has been the most surprising because I have been lost more than a few times! I agree with you Enver and I think it’s time we share a shortcut around town that we’ve learned from Google Maps and our colleagues.

Shortcut  – How to get from Vintonia to Steiltes in 7 minutes.

Yes I know it says 14 minutes but it took me only seven.
