Reach out and make a difference in the life of a senior on National Senior Citizens Day

Spending time with the elderly is an experience to cherish as they hold the keys to unlocking the future.

MBOMBELA – The elderly have always been revered in African culture for being the fonts of wisdom and veritable treasure troves of information through the stories they pass down to the younger generation.

Sadly, they are very seldom celebrated and their accomplishments within our communities almost forgotten. On August 21, we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day to honour them and to highlight the many challenges – ranging from elderly abuse to health – they face on a daily basis.

The aged always have wise words to dispense.

There are a number of ways to spend this day to let them know they are appreciated and their contributions to our society are still valued. Visiting a nursing or retirement home is one way to commemorate  this day.

You would be surprised at the wealth of information you could glean just from having a chat, participating in daily activities, or just lending an ear.

Spending some time with them will make a remarkable difference in their lives.
