Lockdown day 15: Motivational message of the day

Retired Reverend Don Williams of the Methodist Church shares an encouraging message with South Africans during the Covid-19 lockdown. #LockdownSouthAfrica #LockdownFor21Days

Happy Good Friday.

On this important day in the Christian calendar, and at a crucial time in our nation’s history with the Covid-19 lockdown, let us remind ourselves of the events recorded during the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.

Following Jesus saying, “I am thirsty,” and being offered a drink, “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19: 28 – 30

Those words; “It is finished”; are important. Tetelestai, the Greek word, denoted an assigned task completed, a debt repaid and was uttered as a cry of triumph and victory.

Good people, we may be locked down, restricted and anxious about our future, finances or employment. For many, it is a time of extreme trial, and for some, death.

But on this day let us hear the power of our living God to transform situations and bring life in a time of despair and death. Easter Sunday follows Good Friday’s crucifixion.

Scripture: “Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Prayer: I pray the resurrection of Jesus will bring wisdom to our nation’s leaders in this time of crisis, a sense of responsibility to each of us and a sense of hope that there is life beyond Covid-19 for us and our beloved nation. Amen.
