Runners brace the distance for charity
The fourth Take a step for Children Charity Run/Walk 10km race took place at Riverside Park on June 21 with runners getting their hearts pumping and bodies sweating in the name of charity.

There was also a 3km fun walk for the not-so-serious runners and children who also wanted to participate in the day’s activities.
According to Jane de Jager, founder of the Take a Step and Sensible Choices foundations, the race presents an opportunity for the community to give back to those in need. “We gathered clothing for 1 000 orphans this year with the funds of this race going to an orphanage. We believe in uplifting communities so they can also gain access to basic needs.”
The Take a Step Foundation started in Mbombela and has since grown nationally with a branch in each province, according to De Jager.
“We had less participants in the race than last year. It might be because of the colder temperatures and other events occurring on the same day. We might consider moving the event to May next year, said Jo-Anne Wearne, the marketing manager of Riverside Park.
According to Wearne there may be a revamp of the event in the pipeline to attract a bigger field and more donations.
“Each company or local business also gives a donation to advertise and sell their goods on race day,” said Wearne emphasising the charity theme of the event.
“This year we had Rise FM and the Autotec Foundation who once again supported this worthy cause. We are grateful for their support,” she added.
Nontando Sambo of the Autotec Foundation, praised the importance of this event and mentioned the great lengths that the sponsors go to in order to make it possible.
“Spur sponsored 154 burgers for the event and Wimpy also provided generous servings of muffins and coffee.”
