Nelspruit Curro shines in national tournament
The 2014 Curro Schools national tournament got underway at Randburg Curro School on June 24 and 25 with netball, hockey and rugby taking centre stage.

Nelspruit Curro participated with high hopes and their u/15 hockey girls delivered when they won the final 2-0 and claimed bragging rights against their sister schools.
This is the third year that the national tournament is being held by Curro Holdings. The tournament previously featured only sevens rugby and netball, but this year boys and girls hockey were also introduced. The age groups involved were the u/11, u/13, u/15 and u/19s.
The hockey matches were played at the Randburg Astroturf, while the rugby and netball games took place at Curro Aurora.
“Regional trials are held in four regions, north, east, south and west, to select teams for the national tournament. Curro Nelspruit is in the eastern region and the regional tournament was held at Curro Bankenveld in Witbank. At this tournament both the primary and high school competed,” said Derek Putter, extra-curricular head at Nelspruit Curro.
The tournament took place on the Tuesday and Wednesday and started with an opening ceremony to welcome all the Curro schools who participated.
The u/15 rugby sevens team disappointingly lost the final by a high margin of 39-5, ending second in the tournament.
The senior girls and boys hockey teams both lost their opening games by a score- line of 0-2, while the u/14 boys showed their older counterparts how things should be done with a 1-1 draw to keep Nelpruit’s hopes alive.
The boys u/15 team followed suit and also secured second, but showed guts and determination in their
2-1 loss.
The u/19 hockey boys finished in third position, after losing the semi-final.
A total of 28 Curro schools take part in the national tournament. Here u/19 teams for netball and rugby are selected.
“The u/19 sevens rugby team will play in the Atlantic Sevens tournament later this year,” Putter concluded.
