Champ boasts the lowest score in six years
Lourens Volschenk delivered the lowest score in six years when he won the Nelspruit Open 2014 on Sunday at the Nelspruit Golf Club. The 24-year-old also won the trophy in 2012.

A total of 84 players took to the field with a handicap cut of nine. The conditions were a mix bag – a bit cold in the morning, nice sunny weather in the afternoon with a light wind blowing late noon. “The course played a bit longer than usual, but the pin placing was not too bad. Thanks to all the course staff who worked hard to get the greens ready for the tournament. Hollow tining took place four weeks ago,” said general manager Ryk Lacock.
Volschenk played an all-day gross of 137. In second place was Eddie Wilken with 140 gross and on count-off play was Justice Mashego.
Last year’s winner, Teddy Mathebula was tied with Mashego in third place.
The best nett of the day was played by Ruben Fermor with 139 and Christiaan de Beer with 143.
• Am gross – André van Heerden – 67
• Pm gross – Brandon Geere – 71
• Am nettt – Le Roux de Beer – 70
• Pm nett – Ruan Fermor – 68.
Nelspruit Golf Club will host the Mpumalanga open in September where the country’s top players will compete.
Glossary
• Hollow tining is a form of aeration. By removing numerous cores from turf the percentage of air in the soil is increased, which is needed by grass roots. It also allows the release of unwanted gases like carbon dioxide. The increase in air spaces in soil also helps to relieve compaction which is another problem when trying to grow quality turf. Another major advantage is that the hollow tining process removes thatch from the upper soil profile.
• Nett – the total number of shots played for the complete round minus your handicap
• Gross – the total number of shots played for the complete round (normally 18 holes).
