Top squash players clash on the courts
For the second year running, the White River Squash Club was victorious over their Nelspruit rivals in the Top 12 Squash Tournament in White River on October 15.
The intertown, interclub Top 12 Challenge was introduced last year, taking the form of matches between the top-12 ranked players in each club, hosted by each one in turn. Players of equal rank are matched up, earning a point for their win, with the first club to score seven points effectively taking home the trophy.
Although White River won eight of the 12 matches, it was by no means an easy victory. The score was 2-2 after the first four matches and 5-3 after eight.
The strength of the White River Club lay in its top-7 players, who all scored a point. The bottom-five places saw only one win for White River in the form of evergreen Bruce Moxham’s 3-0 victory.
The match between Tom Mullins of White River and Guido Ferreira of Nelspruit ended up being a deciding one and Mullins ended up sealing the victory for his club by scoring the seventh point with a 3-1 win.
The annual contest, held at the end of the winter-league season has added a whole new dimension to the local squash scene and after two losses, the Nelspruit Club will definitely seek revenge next year.
