Local dance stars shine in their first provincial championships
Seven dancers of Rhythm Image Dance Studio's Hazyview branch participated in their first Mpumalanga championships at Uplands in White River on November 14.
Rhythm Image Dance Studio hosted the Mpumalanga Championships, which was attended by dancers from all over the province, including a few from the dance school’s Hazyview studio.
Dancers could participate in three categories: contemporary, Latin, which consisted of the various dances such as cha-cha, samba and jive, and energy, which comprised hip-hop and other high-energy dances.
Micke Botes participated in the Latin and energy in the juvenile division and earned a seventh place the Latin category, while Mia Vos came in fifth in energy in the rising stars division. Zoe Vos took part in the junior division in energy and was the overall winner of hip hop in her division. She also won a silver medal.
Coach Maroula Kroucamp says the dancers practised specific routines for the competition and were judged on a variety of aspects such as their character, energy, endurance and technique.
She was very proud of them, especially since they’ve been dancing for just over a year. “The great thing about it is that they learn new techniques and ways of performing all the time,” she remarked.
The championships were the final event of the year but Kroucamp said the dancers would continue practising the routines they must learn for next year until the studio closes.
It closes with the schools at the end of this month or early December and will reopen the first Tuesday of the new school term.
The Hazyview studio is based at Numbi Primary’s hall and classes take place every Tuesday between 14:30 and 17:00 for children and between 16:00 and 17:00 for ladies.
