Bowlers try every trick in book to win
This past weekend was a hive of activity with bowls players of Nelspruit, LVCC, Bungalows, Waterval Boven, White River and Malelane attending the annual VTN tournament hosted by Barberton Bowling Club.
It was action-packed with 20 teams comprising 80 bowlers who flocked to Barberton to compete against one another. This event is one of the most popular on the bowling calendar with R12 000 in cash prizes to be won.
The format of the game was teams of four and two games of 15 ends were played with a third game of 10 ends, but the rain and hail stopped the games after seven ends.
The VTN is where you play for money for every end and every skin. For each end won with three points or more you get R20 and if the ends haven’t been won, the team which won the point on the last skin collect all of the ends. Round one was pre-drawn but in round three you played strength against strengths money-wise.
All bowlers were eager to win as much money as they could, every trick in the book was tried. Greens were in pristine condition but the Lowveld weather made sure that it was a wet and rainy day. The day soon came to an end with the two hamper draws which Hanlie Nel and Arnold Storkey won, finishing with prize-giving.
