Locals represent SA at World Cup in Australia
The South African u/18 World Cup Indoor Cricket team, coached by local legend, Eric Grimaldi and captained by Ruben de Lange of Hoërskool Nelspruit lost in the tournament final to Australia.
The junior tournament, held in Brisbane saw a lot of local players on the court like Jamie de Vos (Curro), Katie Prior (Uplands), Annerike Jacobs (Hoërskool Nelspruit) and Campbell Davies-Webb (Uplands). The management team also comprised Lowvelders such as Rovonne de Lange, Charmaine Murphy and Jacki van Zyl.
“The games were tough, but for the girls it was a great learning experience. The u/18 girls played 10 games and unfortunately didn’t medal. They will have a chance to represent their country again in 2018 at the next tournament that will be held in Dubai,” said Grimaldi.
The boys u/18 played 12 games and have beaten Australia twice before meeting them again in the final. To get to there, they beat New Zealand by two runs. “We batted first and made 130 runs but we had a hard time on the bowling. We could have won gold. Ruben experienced a world cup two years ago and as always he had a great tournament with the ball and bat.”
The u/14 boys obtained silver as they also lost in the final against Australia.
Teams from north, central and eastern Gauteng and Polokwane will come down to the Lowveld next week to compete in the annual club champs. The first game is set to start on Friday December 2 at the Nelspruit Action Cricket Arena.
