Golfers celebrate a successful year on the green
The Sabie River Sun Golf Club celebrated the end of the year by rewarding players for great achievements.
A year of great achievements on the golf course was celebrated by members of the Sabi River Sun Golf Club at their year-end function and prize-giving on November 28.
Chef Cindy Thomas ensured that there was a spread of delicious dishes, while club captain Neil Waitt made everyone feel welcome.
The following awards were handed out:
• Club champion: Jason Field
• B-Div winner: Brian Merchant
• C-Div winner: Roy Ternent
• Mango cup: Ryan Mckain
• Fryston trophy: Darren Lane
• Chairman’s Cup: Dudley Neilson and Darren Lane
• Price shield: Wayne Wilson and Brendon Steele
• Spirited golfer: Gavin Jacobsen
• Most improved golfer: Rob Snow
• Golfer of the year: Darren Lane
• League pair of the year: Eugene Minnaar and Manie van Wyk
• Captain’s Cup winner: Ryan McKain.
Mark Pain received a special gratitude award for keeping the greens in pristine condition through the years.
The magnificent 18-hole golf course has much history, having started as a nine-hole course built from sand by local farmers in 1954.
The Sabie River Bungalows Golf Club was established in 1972 with Roy Hurndle at the helm, Willem Visser as club captain and Eric Brotherton as president. Gavin Brown was the hotel manager at the time.
In 1991 the course was upgraded to 18 holes and remains a firm favourite among many local and visiting golfers.
