White River dojo yields two new national cup winners
The 2016 Shotokan Cup winners are both members of the White River Shotokan Karate Dojo. Sensei Carien de Bruin, also 2015 champion, was the female cup winner and sensei Amar Mansour won the Shotokan Cup in the male division.
The Shotokan Karate South Africa National Championships were recently held at the Portuguese Hall in Johannesburg.
Eastern Gauteng, Gauteng North, Lowveld Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Western Cape and Boland took part in this prestigious event. The Lowveld team included members from the Mbombela, White River, Hazyview and Skukuza dojos.
Eastern Gauteng earned the most points with Mpumalanga in the second place.
The highlight of the day was as usual when the best fighters of all senior male and female categories competed for the Shotokan cups. Nail-biting stuff indeed! Spectators were on the edge of their seats and judges were highly focused while the competitors were testing their fighting skills to the limit. Years and years of experience was applied to create scoring opportunities and every kick and strike was finished off with surgical precision. The traditional Shotokan Cup kumite categories are truly meant for the best of the best.
“It is a real honour and privilege to have both Shotokan Cup winners in the Lowveld. They are excellent leaders and they are setting good examples for the junior members of the Lowveld region who also gave their everything on the day of the championship,” said sensei Piet Venter from Shotokan Karate South Africa, Lowveld region.
