Chanté sets new SA record

Chanté Waters set a new South African record at the recent Rhino Powerlifting Club National Championship held at Cornerstone College in Pretoria.

Waters, who only started competing in this sport last year, benched 65 kilograms.

Her husband, Raymond won gold in the u/90-kilogram category, retaining his national title for the second time. He only made his comeback this year after recovering from a back injury.

This event was also a qualifier for the World Championship taking place in September in Trutnov, Czech Republic.

Raymond squatted an easy 260 kilograms, benched 167,5 kilograms and mananged a massive 300 kilograms in deadlift.

Unfortunately he did not manage to pull a sizeable 307,5 kilograms in the deadlift. Raymond did not lock his shoulders out on top, and the judging was strict and world-class.

His total added up to 727,5 kilograms at an amazing bodyweight of 89 kilograms.

Chanté competed in her first nationals and won the junior 62-kilogram division.

She squatted 120 kilograms.

She failed her third attempt at 130 kilograms. She deadlifted a massive 160 kilograms. Her total was 345 kilograms.

Both have qualified for the world championship, but will not be going this year.

“We will set our eyes for next year if all goes well. For now we will rest a bit and train to get even stronger than before, and maybe do one more competition before the end of the year,” said Chanté.
