Teams give their all on the rugby field

The schools play a predetermined set of fixtur.es with no final and clear winner

Last week schools from as far as Bloemfontein travelled to Uplands to pit themselves against some of the Lowveld’s finest.

Hilton College, St David’s Marist Inanda, Clifton College, St Stithians College, CBC Boksburg and St Andrew’s School each played three matches, with the locals, Uplands College, Hoërskool Rob Ferreira and Penryn playing two.

Upland’s Vincent Gelderbloem, the organiser, said the main objective of this once-off tournament was to facilitate additional fixtures for the rugby season and to allow schools to select some of their younger players (u/16 and u/17) for their first sides in preparation for the 2018 season.

“Though Hilton College was the stand-out team of the festival, there are no overall winners as such. The schools play a predetermined set of fixtures with no final and clear winner,” Hilton said.

Among the locals, Penryn was able to beat the opponents from Bloemfontein on day one, but suffered a loss of 65-7 against

St Davids from Johannesburg.

Rob Ferreira beat CBC Boksburg on day one with 45-21, but got a hiding of 82-7 against Hilton on day two. The latter continued their onslaught as they beat the hosts 88-7. Uplands also had bend the knee for St Davids, after they were beaten 64-7.
