Trevor Smith Cricket Week enjoyed by all

The biggest primary school cricket week in the country was once again a resounding success, according to organisers, visiting schools and the cricketers alike.

Thirteen schools participated in the recent 2017 Trevor Smith Cricket Week, which was organised by Laerskool Witrivier and played at Hoërskool Rob Ferreira, Laerskool Nelspruit, Nelspruit Primary and Laerskool Laeveld.

That means 38 teams, comprising 460 keen cricketers from the u/9 to u/13 age groups, played in 80 friendly matches throughout the week, in preparation for the third-term leagues.

Organiser Iaan Jacob said the cricket week was an opportunity for the coaches to experiment with different batting orders and bowling options, and to make sure every player had time on the field.

“The u/9 to u/11 teams finished on the Wednesday, but many of them wanted to carry on playing as they said they had enjoyed the cricket so much,” Jacob told Lowvelder.

Although the match results were not counted, the best bowlers and batsmen for the week were awarded medals for their outstanding achievements.

Laerskool Malelane’s Abdullah Mussa was celebrated for his score of 109 with the bat. Stefan Leemans was also awarded a medal for his 101 not out while at the crease for the u/13 Laerskool Kanonkop team.

Prizes for best bowlers went to Malelane’s Stefan for his incredible statistics of seven wickets for seven runs in six overs, and Kanonkop’s Richard Bezuidenhout with six wickets for 22 runs in four overs.

Participating primary schools included Witrivier, Barberton, Dr Annecke, Goedehoop, Kanonkop, Klipfontein, Laeveld, Malelane, Nelspruit, Numbi, Nelspruit Primary, Taalfees and Uplands. Visiting teams were provided accommodation at the Laerskool Witrivier hostel.
