Abednico retains his Skukuza Marathon title
The unstoppable runner from Born2Win, Abednico Mashaba, defended his Skukuza Castle Lager Half Marathon title in a time of 1:09:27.
Last year Mashaba was victorious with a time of 1:08:52, and he will have to wait another year if he wants to break Vincent Khutoane’s record time of 1:06:27 in 2009.
Mashaba has been one of the most dominant runners in the Lowveld. Earlier this year he took a comfortable win at the Sudwala Screaming Monster – a race he also won in 2016.
He dominated the 10-kilometre Mozma Road Race, and placed second in the Selati Half-Marathon in Malalane.
Runner-up, Botha Henwood was hot on his heels with a time of 1:10:54.
Winner of the Sudwala Screaming Monster 21-kilometre, LVCC’s Ntuthuko Maseko, rounded off the podium place finishers in a time of 1:11:06.
This half-marathon is an incredible mix of pain and determination, anguish and triumph, courage and fear.
Marlize Retief (Boxer Athletics Club in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal) pinned down a new record for the women, crossing the finish line in 1:21:54 in 2016. This year she missed her 2016 time by a mere
0,1 of a second.
KPMG’s Kate Roberts came second with a time of 1:19:02.
One of Kruger Marathon Club’s top athletes, Derick Maluleke, set the best time of his club in 1:22:14.
Sandra Mohaohe ran exactly the same time as she did in 2016, crossing the finish line in 1:44:30.
More than 1 900 athletes competed in one of the Lowveld’s most spectacular races.
