Curro run in nine tries to earn place in u/14 final

Curro face one more hurdle, the final away against Hoogenhout.

Curro Nelspruit’s u/14 rugby team remain undefeated in competitive matches this season. In their last two games, the quarter-final versus Hoërskool Vryburg and the semi-final against Leeuwenhof Akademie,  they scored 121 points and conceded 15.

Curro will face Hoërskool Hoogenhout in the final of the Noordvaal Virsekerbeker (medium schools) in Bethal this coming Saturday.

They thrashed Leeuwenhof Akademie 61-5 in a pulsating semi-final at home on Saturday.

The Curro lads produced a superb 50 minutes of high-tempo, attacking rugby and the Leeuwenhof boys were simply never in the game. Curro ran in nine tries, of which eight were converted.

Centre, Emmanuel Bhiya scored two tries and kicked seven conversion for a personal tally of 24 points. Curro’s scrum half, Jaco Odendaal scored the first try in the first minute of the game.  When eighthman Leonard Bornman scored his team’s third try in the sixth minute and the scoreboard read 21-0, it was all over for Leeuwenhof.

The visitors played with pride but their skills level and pace were lacking. Curro scored tries at will.

Captain and hooker, Udo Cilliers, Leonard, Jaco and Emmanuel were outstanding, but the victory was a team effort.

The hard work on the training field was evident on the playing field. Each Curro player knew what to do and how to do it. They did the basics well, held on to the ball and went through the phases and gained territory. The tries followed. If a planned move was on, they executed it. If not, they recycled and used the next opportunity.

Curro also scrummed very well. They were not any bigger than the Leeuenhof boys. Their scrum was a tight, well-drilled unit and supplied the backline with quality, front-foot possession.

At half-time Curro led 42-5. A few unforced errors did creep into Curro’s game in the second half, but they were still always in control of the match.

Udo led by example and contributed greatly at the breakdown and in defence. In the second half he took a hard knock and went down. Medical procedure was followed, and he was secured in a stretcher and taken to hospital. He was assessed and had no serious injury. He will be available to lead the team in the final.

Hoogenhout defeated Brits 22-20 in the other u/14 semi on Saturday.
