Women golfers have fun in ‘Solheim Cup’
Female golfers from the Onderberg competed in their own "Solheim Cup" on September 16 and 17 at Kambaku Golf Club in Komatipoort.
Following the Solheim Cup in Scotland in August, Onderberg female golfers held their own tournament on September 16 and 17 at the Kambaku Golf Club in Komatipoort.
It was the ladies’ fourth tribute to the tournament between America and Europe.
The 20 participants were divided into two teams, representing the two countries. America, dressed in navy and red, consisted of Roenel Basson (captain), Rose Powell, Jean-Mari Wilken, Ester Britz, Mia Lourens, Diana Carter, Annelize Burger, Zarne Cilliers, Dimpo Mhlongo and Lucia Mhlabane.
The latter two are development golfers who have performed very well at various local tournaments and the organisers were very happy to have them take part.

The Europe team, in yellow and blue, were Shani Swanepoel (captain), Lizette Barnard, Janette Maritz, Amanda Basson, Jeanette Kienhuis, Tarryn Maritz, Martinette van Dyk, Annie Balcomb, Natasha Brooderyk and Corlia Hoy.
On the first day, they started out with betterball matchplay, after which America led 3-2. After lunch the captains called their new parings for foursomes and America managed another 3-2 win.
The highly motivated Americans wore matching hats and scarves and waved their small flags.

The next morning participants played singles and the competition was fierce. The result was 5,5-4,5 in America’s favour.
America was crowned the overall winners and Roenel Basson was handed the Ronelle Putter Solheim Cup.
Basson thanked Kambaku management and staff for hosting the successful event.
