Anglers compete to hook the heaviest bass
A total of 22 teams competed in this year's Bass Fishing Competition hosted at Driekoppies Dam by Lien se Kleuternes.
Despite low water levels and the merciless Lowveld sun, 22 teams of anglers took to the water at Driekoppies Dam near Schoemansdal early Saturday morning for the annual Lien se Kleuternes Bass Fishing Competition.
Last year, the event had to be cancelled as water levels were too low, but this year teams had a great time and bagged several bass.
Teams could weigh in a maximum of 10 bass, with prizes up for grabs for the heaviest fish in several categories, as well as the heaviest bag (per team).
A few children played at the water’s edge and cheered on the teams when they returned to shore to see how big their catch was and how they measured up to the competition. The children were also delighted to help release the fish once they’d been weighed.
Lien se Kleuternes staff stocked cold drinks and boereworsrolls that the anglers and their supporters could enjoy during their breaks.
By mid-afternoon, the anglers gathered for the prize-giving, many sporting bright red sunburned skin.
Among the juniors, Renier Snyman had three of the five heaviest fish at 1,805kg, 1,29kg and 925g. Arno Bam Jnr. had the third heaviest fish at 975g and HC Bam was fifth with a fish of 715g.
The woman with the heaviest fish was Felicity Carey with a fish of 1,42kg and Annelize Genhardt was second with 1kg.
The winning men were Arrie Bam with a bass of 3,11kg, Morné Strauss with one of 1,92kg and Hermanus Snyman with 1,9kg.
The teams with the heaviest bags were Venom Lures with 21,12 points, Crackle Back with 20, 925 points, Brayshaw with 20, 615 points and Angling and Outdoor with 20,4.
The winners were rewarded with fishing rods, reels, hampers and vouchers.
