Top cricketers set to represent the province

The tournament which seeks to provide youngsters with a platform to showcase their talent, offers an ideal opportunity for the locals to catch the eye of scouts. 

Seven local cricketers have been chosen to compete in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week as part of the Mpumalanga team that will be heading to Johannesburg to contend alongside 200 top young players from across the country and Namibia.

The u/19 tournament will be hosted from December 17 to 21 and promises to be an action-packed week in which the
13 Mpumalanga players will be testing their mettle against the best in the country.

Hoping to improve on last year’s results in which the Mpumalanga team lost four T20 games of 50 overs and drew two, team manager Hendrik Joubert said he is looking forward to seeing the young players whack it out for the top spot.

“We have four experienced players in the team, but overall we are going into the competition with a young team,” he said.

Divan Jacobs

Four of the participants in this year’s team played for Nelspruit High School’s first cricket team which is celebrating a winning streak in the Mpumalanga Super league this season.

Both Jacques Vosloo and Divan Jacobs, who will be part of the team setting off for Johannesburg on December 16, scored 386 and 368 runs respectively in the nine matches they have played to date.

“The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is a platform for identifying the best in youth cricket. We look forward to seeing more talent being unearthed at this year’s tournament,” said Phindile Phiri, Coca-Cola Africa senior communications manager, brand experience of this year’s tournament.

According to information provided by Cricket SA, the tournament which has been hosted for 39 years has produced more than 80 Proteas since South Africa’s readmission to the international cricket arena.
