Penryn’s relay teams exceed all expectations

Zanele Chavangwane of Penryn College performed exceptionally at this year’s Mediclinic Nelspruit Interhigh. She took home the trophy for the best senior girl athlete for her performance in track events.

She bagged gold in the girls u/16 100-metre race, silver in the 200 metres and bronze in the 400 metres. She was named senior victrix ludorum.

The school also boasted some great performances in the girls u/19 long jump and boys u/14 long jump, with Bethel Makoni and Delroy Mudzamiri both winning gold medals respectively.

Bethel also bagged a gold medal in the 200 metres, silver in the 100 metres and silver in the 400-metre race.

Josh Greeff, competing in the u/15 boys javelin and head boy, James Goldschmidt, competing in the boys u/19 javelin, both took home bronze medals.

“The day started off very slow for us as we ranked last in the first three hours of the meeting and as the afternoon approached, athletes started performing very well,” said Xolani Grootboom, head of athletics at Penryn.

“The highlight of the day, or rather the main event was one everyone was waiting for. The relays were exciting and very close. Penryn had put in a lot of hours at practise and this showed as the u/14 boys relay team won silver and the boys u/16 won gold,” he said.
