First win for Curro rugby teams in Noordvaal

The Pumas section of the Noordvaal league started off at Penryn College on Saturday with Penryn hosting Curro Nelspruit.

Although the vistors had the upper hand in most results, Penryn’s first team hockey girls flew the flag with a well-deserved 5-0 victory, after a 3-3 draw against Uplands last week.

In the first rugby match of the day, Curro’s u/14s, who in four matches have scored 273 points while only conceding 10, were out to continue their success so far.

Curro received the kick-off, and from this used their larger forwards to move the ball upfield and spread the ball wide to score in the first minute of the match. The Curro team continued in this vein to dominate the first half, scoring 49 points in 25 minutes.

At half-time the Curro coaches mercifully put on their reserve players, which slowed down the pace of the match. Penryn scored a consolation try in the second half, while Curro scored another three tries, ending as 68-5 winners.

For the u/15 game, it was the defending champs of the Virsekerbeker smashing the hosts 73-0 in a 35-minute match.

The visitors played high-tempo running rugby and their backline players scored at will. They created multiple scoring opportunities to go into half-time 44-0 up. It took Curro only 10 minutes of the second half to score another five unanswered tries and reach the 70 point mercy rule.

The u/16 game was no different from the previous games for Curro.

They were keen to continue the school’s ascendency and used their loose forwards to dominate the contact situations and provide quality ball for their elite runners. Curro displayed good continuity in contact situations and managed to put multiple phases together.

Penryn could not contend with these continued attacks and Curro led 24-5 at half-time. The second half was much of the same with Curro keeping the ball alive and Penryn tackling shadows. Penryn did manage to score two tries in the match, but Curro were the deserved 50-12 winners.

In the first-team match, Penryn were determined to get a win and harvest some pride for their school.

The latter came out firing in an all-or-nothing effort. Curro’s defence held strong, visibly frustrating the Penryn players. Through the hands of Curro’s backline players, they scored two tries in the first half to take the half-time score to 14-5.

In the second half Curro’s overeagerness in scoring positions cost them many opportunities.

The outright never-say-die attitude of the Curro players seemed to break the Penryn morale as they looked defeated before the match was over.

The final score was 19-10 in the visiting side’s favour.
