A round-up of this weekend’s winter sports
It came as no surprise when Curro Nelspruit's u/14 and u/15 teams, ranked 11th and 22th respectively, smashed Bergvlam to a 73- and 69-point defeat.

• Bergvlam get smashed by a bigger and better Curro – win all but one against Uplands
• Lowveld High win all their netball and rugby games, fall short in hockey
• Hoërskool Nelspruit take the spoils in the dying minutes
It came as no surprise when Curro Nelspruit’s u/14 and u/15 teams, ranked 11th and 22th respectively, smashed Bergvlam to a 73- and 69-point defeat. Though Vlammies played their hearts out, they were simply outplayed by a bigger and better team. In a much more tightly contested match, Curro’s u/16s came close to a win but were narrowly beaten by 11 points. Bergvlam’s first team can be commended for their performance, but they too could unfortunately not pull through. Here, Curro walked away with a 45-25 win. On the hockey field, Bergvlam’s u/14s were the only team to beat Curro, and the latter’s first team beat Bergvlam, 2-0. The rest of the games all ended in a 0-0 draw.
Although they floundered on the rugby field, they shone on the netball court. They beat Curro in all but one game, and convincingly so. The only team that did not pull through was the u/16s, who lost 10-6.
The results against Uplands looked considerably better. Bergvlam beat all but one of Uplands’ rugby teams, but on the hockey field, lost all their games.
One thing is certain: Lowveld High’s teams mean business this season. They gave it their all on the rugby field and won all but one against Penryn. The latter suffered their greatest loss against LHS’ second team with 37-7.
The u/14s beat Penryn 24-22 and the u/15s won 50-26. Penryn’s u/16s overpowered LHS and managed to clench a nine-point victory. Lowveld High’s first team had the upper hand as they capitalised on Penryn’s mistakes in the first half. Penryn launched a counter-attack in the second, and Lowveld High can count themselves lucky for only losing the game 29-27. LHS also impressed on the netball courts when they won five of the eight games. The results could not have been more different on the Astro, as Penryn won all the games by between two and eight points. The boys played their games on Tuesday, during which the first team lost 3-0 and the second team and u/14s ended in a 0-0 draw.
Hoërskool Nelspruit’s Rhinos took their second win in the Tuks School Series on Saturday when they beat Eldoraigne 22-19.
NHS struggled to find second gear throughout the game, but narrowly escaped a defeat in the dying minutes. They became the school’s seventh rugby team to walk away with the spoils on the day, with only the u/14Bs and the u/16As not being able to beat Eldoraigne.
On the netball court, the first team, the u/18Bs, u/15As and the u/14Bs managed to beat Eldoraigne, with the u/15Bs game ending in a draw. The hockey girls won four of the nine games and drew one. Eldoraigne suffered the greatest defeat against NHS, which scored five goals against their one. All but the u/16A boys hockey team managed to pull through.
