Boschfontein FC takes this year’s Selati Cup

Boschfontein FC took home the Selati Cup after defeating Naas Academy by one penalty kick at KaMhlushwa Stadium on Sunday.

True to form the Selati Cup’s final match had fans on the edge of their seats, with a few who turned rowdy and threw bottles onto the field.

The women’s teams warmed up the crowd with Schoemansdal Super Strikers tackling Phefeni United for the title. The former walked away with R20 000 thanks to a 2-0 win.

Former Selati Cup champs, Shongwe Chiefs were up next against Steenbok Classic for the third-place honours. An interesting match followed in which Steenbok could not manage to score a goal to match Shongwe Chiefs’ two.

Government officials, representatives of RCL and soccer legend Lucas Radebe made their rounds, building the suspense for the match to decide the 12th Selati Cup champions.

Naas Academy took the lead early on, scoring two goals before half-time. Boschfontein FC then fought back, scoring three goals in five minutes.

Naas scored their third goal, resulting in a three-all draw and penalty kicks as the deciding factor.  Boschfontein scored seven penalties to six, earning them the title.

The top teams were all rewarded with thousands of rand in prize money and goodie bags.

A development tournament was also held.
Block C Hungry Lions were the u/13 champions, scoring five penalties against four after a three-goal draw against Middleplaas Mighty Blizzards.

The u/15 champs were Ngwenyeni Academy who beat Schoemansdal Harmony 1-0.

Radebe, who joined the Selati Cup team as brand ambassador last year, said he was happy to see that football is at a good standard and well supported in Nkomazi.

He said he will always visit the region for the Selati Cup final. “There is talent here which the players must unearth. Football is not all about kicking the ball, but being disciplined and focused. That will take them to the next level. As an individual, you need to set goals for yourself, and push yourself to achieve them,” Radebe urged.

The top players, teams and officials of the tournament were nominated for the Selati Cup Awards which will take place on June 22.
