Well-practised moves earns karatekas new colours

Members of the karate academy JSKA Malelane all moved to the next level after their recent June grading.

Karatekas from Malalane all moved to the next level after performing very well during their recent June grading at the JSKA Malelane dojo.

Each member was required to show his or her proficiency in the basics: kata (series of karate movies) and kumite (sparring).

If they earned enough points, they moved to the next level and could wear a different coloured belt or get stripes on their current one.

The four highest achievers were named karatekas of the day in their various categories. They were Elika Odendaal, Isabelle van Dyk, Qhamani Salman and AJ van der Walt.

Ruan Maritz also achieved his third kyu brown I, which means he is just two levels away from shodan, the lowest black belt level.

Local karatekas can undergo grading twice a year, with their next opportunity in November. This gives them time to perfect their techniques.
