Their list of achievements are nothing short of impressive.

Both started dancing at a very young age. Marlon, a 20-year-old from Brazil, started dancing at the age of 12 in Maria Olenewa’ Dance State School, where he later joined Balletarrj Youth Company in Rio de Janeiro.

Among a lot of competitions throughout Brazil, he made it to the YAGP Finals NY in 2014 and 2015 and was a finalist in the World Ballet Competition 2015 in Orlando, where he was rewarded with a scholarship for The Washington Ballet in the trainee programme.

He received a contract and was working with the Mariinsky Theatre Primorsky Stage in Vladivostok, Russia; where he was granted the opportunity to travel to China, South Korea and Saint Petersburg. He has lately been working with Ballet Zurich in Switzerland for Alexey Ratmansky’s Swan Lake.

According to the owner of the studio, Tanya Edwards-Smith, it is not often that dancers from Mbombela get exposed to events like these. “We are trying to open the kids up to new possibilities and different dance styles.

“Marlon and Ruan were the perfect candidates to show them the commitment if you want to make a life out of dancing,” she said.
