Open-water swim series concludes for the year

The second and last open-water swim series of the 2018/19 season concluded at Longmere Dam, presented by LowMed Health and Sport Performance Centre, last week.

The event saw the first 10-kilometre category since the series was introduced in 2016.

The captain of Mpumalanga Swimming, who was in action at the Golfinhos Sprint gala last month, Jacey Bekker was the first male to prevail over the 10 000-metre in a time of two hours, 26 minutes and
33 seconds.

Over the 5 000 metres, Jordyn Minifie (female open) came in first place with a time of 1:11:35 with Megan de Wet (female open) taking second in 1:19:06 and member of the national training squad who was at Kings Park Pool, Durban in June, Erica Sibande rounding off the podium in 1:28:54.

The 3 000-metre event attracted some well-known athletes such as Jetro Piso, Andrew Matthew and professional triathlete, Dylan Nortje. Jetro, however, took top honours in a time of 43:18 – a mere three seconds ahead of Matthew, who took the silver in 43:21, and Dylan, who crossed the finish line in 44:44.

Lowvelder previously reported on Hannah Drewes, who during the first series completed the 1 500-metre in 35,13. Her time, however, was 25,13. Lowvelder apologises for any inconvenience caused.

In the second series, Hannah competed in the 3 000-metre event and came out of the water with a time of 53:36.

Junior Annabelle Davel defended her title in the 750-metre event. She improved on her time since the last event, which took place only a month ago, by 0,87 seconds. Her time of 14:32 was enough to secure her first place.
