Swimmers come home with a haul of medals
Swimming is one the few sports where age has no limits.

Swimming is one the few sports where age has no limits. This past season Fins Swimming Club had the following swimmers participating in various events across the country:

Master swimmers
• Geraldine Janssens (74) recently participated in the SA Masters Championship in Port Elizabeth. She swam in five events and improved all her personal best times, achieved three gold medals and broke the South African records in the 50-metre, 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke events, earned silver in the individual medley and bronze for 50-metre freestyle. Janssens was awarded her South African colours and will head off to Korea in August to participate in the World Masters Swimming Competition.
• Emily Khumalo (37) a first-time master swimmer swam five events, improved all her personal best times. She obtained a medal in the 50-metre breaststroke.
• Mia Robertson (37) participated in the team division of the “Fittest in Cape Town” in February this year. It was a three-day international Crossfit event. It involved an ocean swim and a variety of Crossfit exercises. Her team achieved 22nd place
out of 83.
• Karin Cilliers (44) competed in the Iron Man Triathlon in Port Elizabeth in March. She attained 28th position out of 58 competitors in her age group (45-50). The race included a two-kilometre ocean swim, 141,1-kilometre bike ride and 28,9-kilometre run.

• Mikaela Goelst (13) competed in the South African Junior Nationals in Durban in March. Mikaela took part in eight events, achieving personal best times in seven, and swam finals in the 50-metre and 100-metre breaststroke and 50-metre freestyle.
• Markus Steyn (13) competed in the SA Regional Age Group Level Two competition at Sasolburg. He swam in eight events, improved all his personal best times and achieved one gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
• Janco Radermeyer (13) also competed in the SA Regional Age Group Level Two. He swam in nine events, improved eight personal best times and achieved eight gold medals.
“Fins Swimming Club congratulate the swimmers on their fantastic achievements. A coach needs to enable the swimmers to keep an open mind in seeking better technique and training procedures.
“Every detail is important. Competitive swimmers need motivation both intrinsic and extrinsic to support a more positive attitude for their swimming standard to improve. A coach must be willing to adapt and never stop learning,” said head coach, Norma Kumm.
