Nelspruit Rugby Club’s first team in desperate need of a win

Nelspruit Rugby Club's first team narrowly missed out on a win against Witbank on Saturday.

If they, however, played as clinical as they did in the dying moments of the match, they would without a doubt have secured a much-needed win in this year’s premier league.

Witbank, however, kept their composure in the most crucial part of the game and defended their 27-21 lead. Nelspruit was on the attack in front of an overwrought crowd, but after they conceded a penalty, Witbank kicked the ball into touch and it was game over.

They had a great start to their season beating Middelburg comfortably. The home team have, however, not won a single game, and currently sit in fourth position on the Phakisa Premier League log. Their chances of ending up in the quarter-finals hang in the balance.

Should they lose against the Highlanders from Newcastle on home turf this coming weekend, chances are that they might move down to last place. If they win, they will have to do so convincingly if they want some leeway in the remainder of the season and hopefully gain some momentum.

Last year’s top try scorer, Dylan Soderlund, was back on wing and joined Juandre van Wyk and Sam Govere, who each scored a try.

Timothy Townsend converted all three tries. Nelspruit’s second team were, however, on a high after a close victory over our next door neighbours. Their confidence will be even greater after their 38-8 win, going into the match against the Highlanders.

Definitely the star of the show was Clinton Coetzee, who added 13 points to their total. Zama Mhlongo, Lloyd Malatsi, Terrence Ngwenya and Cameron Pullen each paid a visit behind try line.

The thirds, however, lost 22-8. Catch all the action on Saturday from 14:00 onward at Nelspruit Rugby Club.
