Young Waves crash into the SAB League

Mzinti Young Waves will be able to make their mark on the SAB League this year, after winning the Promotional League at Driekoppies Stadium last Saturday.

Nkomazi Promotional League winners Mzinti Young Waves and runners-up Driekoppies’ Shongwe Highlanders will be competing in the SAB League soon following great performances at Driekoppies Stadium last Saturday.

Both the semi-finals and finals were held on the same day.

Sibange Young Bucks and the Highlanders faced each other first, with the latter winning 2-1.

Buffelspruit Home Defenders then took on Mzinti Young Waves, but lost after the latter scored the only goal of the match.

Young Waves were granted a two-hour break before they faced Shongwe Highlanders in the finals.

The match featured a stunning performance from both teams and after 45 minutes, the teams were still tied at one goal each.

Highlanders scored a second goal right after half-time and continued the match with a very defensive playing style.

Young Waves were given a penalty in the added four minutes of the match and managed to equalise the score. The match went to a penalty shootout and Young Waves won with 5 to 4.

They are the sixth team to be crowned as champions and will join the fourteen teams already in the SAB League.

The winners were awarded gold medals and a trophy, while the runners-up only received their medals after a protest against the semi-final match result failed.

The previous league winners were Mdladla Black Rovers (first winners in the 2012/13 season), KaMhlushwa City Stars, KaMhlushwa Real Madrid, Mhlabanyatsi and last year’s winners were Mbuzini Boiling Water.

While the two winners are automatically promoted to the SAB League, three teams were relegated to the Promotional League; Schoemansdal Double Action, Jeppes Reef Babylon and Buffelspruit All Blacks.

The SAB League is a regional league played in 52 regions across the country. The winners of each region are then invited to the play-offs, where they compete to be promoted to the ABC Motsepe League at the end of the season.

Preparations and registration for the SAB League are currently taking place and the kick-off is planned for the first week of September.
