Curro march on to Virseker quarter-finals

On a wind-swept Curro field the schoolboys waged war

It was running schoolboy rugby at its best when Curro Nelspruit hosted Hoërskool Jan Viljoen in the first knockout round of the 2019 Virsekerbeker.

The u/14 rugby team from the home school gave a master-class second half performance to dismantle Jan Viljoen 27-5.

The boys from Randfontein scored the first try as early as the second minute. It was their only points of the match.

Curro hit back with two tries in the first half, for a 12-5 lead.

There was little difference between the teams in the initial ten minutes of the match. As the first half progressed Curro took control of the game.

A early second half penalty by Cilliers van Heerden put a vital two-score gap between the teams. Curro upped the tempo of the game and the Jan Viljoen lads could not cope.

The home school’s u/14 side scored two more tries for the 27-5 win. They were gifted possession, as the Highveld boys made too many unforced errors.

The u/16 clash was a much closer encounter and could have gone either way. The Curro boys were just that little bit hungrier.  This earned them a 33-27 victory.

It was a stunning display of precision rugby from both teams.

Curro fly half, Benji Richardson converted four out of five while Jan Viljoen’s Austin Nel converted one.

Curro Nelspruit’s u/16 side led 19-12 at half time.

Curro Nelspruit’s u/15s played away a combined Curro Heuwelkruin/Curro Northern Academy team. The Polokwane team won 32-24 in a tightly contested match.

The quarter-finals will be played on July 27. Curro Nelspruit’s u/14 and u/16 teams will play away against Hoërskool Brits.
